Ashley's story
Ashley, aged 22, grew up on Koopmanskloof Winery. He has three siblings: two older sisters and a younger brother. His early years were enriched by his community, attending the Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre on the farm as a baby and later joining the Pebbles Project After-School Club at age six.
One of Ashley’s cherished memories from this time was when the After-School Club was transformed into a makeshift music studio. Ashley recalls: "There were musical instruments for us to play. It was so much fun! I tried playing the drums, and I have fond memories of my friends playing together like a real band."
Ashley developed a passion for basketball in high school, often spending weekends on the court with friends. Unsure of his career path after high school, Ashley found clarity when his mother reached out to the Pebbles Project Early Adulthood (EAP) Programme Manager. With her support, Ashley secured a bursary to study towards a diploma in Business Administration at Boland College.
As a requirement of the Business Administration diploma, Ashley needs to complete 18 months’ worth of practical hours. Ashley is currently completing an 18-month practical internship at the Pebbles Project head office in Stellenbosch under the guidance of the Administration Manager.
Ashley speaks highly of his internship experience, emphasizing the camaraderie among Pebbles staff: “Everyone gets along so well, which I really love. I doubt I’d fit in as comfortably anywhere else.” He feels that the internship is enhancing his professional skills, particularly his ability to multitask.
Reflecting on his journey, Ashley credits Pebbles Project for transforming his life: “My family and even my school friends are surprised by how things have turned out for me. I wasn’t always the ‘good boy’ in class, but now I’m studying and thriving in my internship.”
When asked about his plans for the future, Ashley aims to complete his diploma next year and says that: “I would love to stay on at Pebbles if an opportunity were to present itself and possibly explore further studies in Human Resources while pursuing my love for basketball.”
During his internship, Ashley's appreciation for Pebbles Project has deepened: “As a child, I didn’t fully grasp the extent of Pebbles’ support. Witnessing their work first-hand has opened my eyes to the impact that they have on farming communities.”
We eagerly anticipate Ashley's future endeavours and the contributions he will make to Pebbles Project and beyond.
Gershwin's Story
At just 19 years old, Gershwin's path to personal and professional growth with Pebbles Project is nothing short of inspiring. Born and raised in Melkbosstrand, Gershwin is one of three siblings, he has an older sister and a younger brother. Gershwin faced an initial setback after missing the submission deadline for college enrolment after finishing high school. However, fate intervened through a distant relative who resides on Koopmanskloof Winery who introduced him to Pebbles Project.
Gershwin reached out to the Pebbles Project Early Adulthood Programme (EAP) Manager. She encouraged him to join the Pebbles Project Youth Development Centre in Stellenbosch. Moving in with his distant relative on the farm, Gershwin found a new sense of belonging and stability.
The pivotal moment arrived when Pebbles Project was offered an opportunity to enrol a beneficiary in an IT course. Recognizing Gershwin's enthusiasm and potential, the EAP Programme Manager nominated him for the rigorous one-year IT Technical Support course, accredited by MICT SETA and delivered by Torque Technical Computer Training (Pty) Ltd.
Reflecting on his experience, Gershwin acknowledged the initial challenges of grasping the theory aspect of the course, but found his stride through hands-on application during a practical internship at Pebbles Project's head office. Working closely with the Pebbles Project IT Officer, he gained invaluable experience that solidified his understanding of IT fundamentals. Beyond technical skills, Gershwin is enjoying his one-year practical internship and working under the supervision of the IT Officer and the Computer Literacy Co-Ordinator. Gershwin cherishes the supportive environment at Pebbles Project, describing it as a second family where he feels accepted and valued.
When asked to share a special memory at Pebbles Project, Gershwin gives a heartfelt response: “There are too many, it’s tough to choose just one. I really enjoy being at Pebbles. I feel very proud to be here.” His bond with the EAP Programme Manager exemplifies Pebbles' commitment to mentorship and support.
Gershwin's journey is fuelled by a passion for architecture sparked during high school, particularly through his love for technical drawing. His dream is to pursue further studies in both IT and architecture, a testament to his ambition and the supportive environment Pebbles Project provides.
When asked about his dreams for the future, Gershwin says that: “I would like to pursue further studies in IT, but also explore my passion to become an Architect.”
Gershwin is proud of his journey thus far. His family is just as proud. He says that: “My Mom loves to brag about how far I’ve come and my hope is that my journey will inspire my younger brother.”
Looking ahead, the Pebbles Project team eagerly anticipates Gershwin's future achievements, ready to support his aspirations in IT and architecture. His story stands as a beacon of hope and possibility for other young adults in agricultural communities, encouraging them to engage with Pebbles Project for transformative opportunities.
As Gershwin himself passionately asserts: "Pebbles is like family to me. They've made me feel included, part of a team. I feel like I truly belong here."
