Driving Digital Inclusion: The Digitruck Program in Sierra Leone

By Close The Gap

Bringing Technology to Women of Sierra Leone

In a world increasingly defined by technology, access to digital tools and knowledge can determine one’s opportunities in life. For many people in rural and underserved areas, this access remains out of reach. The Digitruck program in Sierra Leone seeks to change that. By bringing digital education directly to the people in the most remote areas, this initiative is making waves in communities across the country.

The Digitruck is a fully equipped, solar-powered mobile classroom that travels to remote villages and towns, providing a unique opportunity for individuals to develop essential digital skills. From learning how to navigate a computer to understanding how the internet can unlock new possibilities, the program delivers much more than education: it allows for empowerment.

Empowering Women and Girls Through Digital Skills

“At first, I did not know about how to create a folder or how to refresh, but now I can learn, I have learned.”

One of the main focuses of the Digitruck program is addressing the digital gender gap by empowering women and girls. In many parts of Sierra Leone, societal norms and a lack of resources limit women’s opportunities for education and professional growth. The Digitruck works to break down these barriers.

In collaboration with Media Matters for Women, the program focuses on providing tailored digital training to meet the basic needs of female participants. These sessions primarily cover fundamental skills such as creating a Gmail account, organizing folders on a computer, and typing on keyboards: tasks that are often not part of their daily routines.

The courses further emphasize practical digital literacy, and participants also receive training on important topics such as cyber safety and online security, equipping them to navigate the digital world with confidence.

The impact is undeniable. Women who once were excluded from technology are now using their new skills to improve their lives and uplift their communities. Whether it is supporting women entrepreneurs to improve their small businesses or teaching schoolgirls how to use an email account, the women and girls participating in the Digitruck program are proving that technology can be a force for positive change.

Partnerships That Drive Change

The success of the Digitruck program is further based on its valuable partnerships. Close the Gap provides the computer hardware for the program, while Media Matters for Women delivers hands-on training to women entering the Digitruck. Together, both our organizations ensure that the program is impactful, sustainable, and community driven.

Media Matters for Women empowers rural women in Sierra Leone through education, while they are enhancing the Digitruck’s focus on digital literacy. Their local engagement helps participants connect with trainers and embrace the program as their own.

Shaping a Connected Future

The Digitruck program demonstrates what is possible when creativity, technology, and determination come together. It is more than just a classroom on wheels; it is a symbol of hope, inclusion, and opportunity. By empowering women and girls, bridging the digital divide, and fostering skills for the future, the Digitruck is transforming lives in Sierra Leone.

While the Digitruck is driving change, there is still much work to be done. To support similar initiatives, we must continue to invest in digital inclusion, collaborate with local organizations, and advocate for access to technology for all. At Close the Gap, we aim to create a future where every person, regardless of location, background or gender, can thrive in a connected world. Let’s make sure our Digitruck journey continues, one village, one learner, and one opportunity at a time.
