In 2025, the Learn to Live School of Skills stands as a beacon of hope for vulnerable youth, welcoming 238 learners, including 80 new intakes. These young people, aged 14-18, come from at-risk backgrounds, seeking the chance to rewrite their futures.
For over a century, the Salesian Institute Youth Projects (SIYP) has been transforming young lives. At the heart of their efforts is the Learn to Live School of Skills, a flagship program that blends academic education, vocational training, and essential life skills to break the cycle of poverty.
More than just a school, Learn to Live equips students with the tools to succeed—offering technical skills, entrepreneurial knowledge, literacy development, and psychosocial support. Led by Principal Carla Cabrita, the dedicated team of educators, occupational therapist, and social worker ensures holistic development, supported by an on-site Wellness Centre for comprehensive care.
Learn to Live Impact in 2024 tells a story of resilience and transformation:
66,000 meals served, ensuring no child learns on an empty stomach.
Holistic support through full-time social work and occupational therapy.
1000+ direct and indirect lives changed, including learners, their families & community members.
But the need is greater than ever. Each day, more young people look for opportunities to rise above their circumstances. With your support, SIYP can continue to provide daily meals, transport assistance, and the hands-on learning that prepares learners to enter the workforce or become entrepreneurs.
This is more than education—it’s empowerment. It’s breaking barriers and creating a ripple effect in communities across Cape Town.
