Mandela Day 2024: Over 10,000 Meals Served and 2600 Litres of Soup Distributed to Cape Town's Underserved Communities

By Salesian Institute Youth Projects

This year's Mandela Day was an extraordinary success, thanks to the incredible efforts of celebrity Chef Jenny Morris and her Soul Food Kitchen. The event at SIYP made a significant impact on underserved communities and youth, providing much-needed support and nourishment.

Event Highlights:

Sandwich Distribution:

With the generous donation of 1200 loaves of bread from Blue Ribbon, an impressive 9000 sandwiches were made. The remaining 300 loaves were distributed to those in need across Cape Town's most at-risk communities.

Soup Production:

An astounding 2600 litres of soup were prepared, thanks to the donation of vegetables and soup ingredients by local businesses and over 400 members of the public who spent 67 minutes and more at SIYP chopping vegetables throughout the day.

Vegetables:

A total of 250kg of vegetables were distributed in communities.

Support from Coca-Cola: Coca-Cola provided tables, gazebos, and entertainment, ensuring a vibrant and enjoyable atmosphere for all attendees.

The Learn to Live Marimba Band and Choir performed at intervals, adding a touch of musical delight to the day.

Special Treat for Learners:

Several Learn to Live students had the unique opportunity to enjoy a trip from Century City to Cape Town CBD, courtesy of Sightseeing SA’s red tour bus operation. For some of these learners, it was their first time experiencing such a journey.

Beneficiaries and Impact:

The Salesian Institute Youth Projects was the main beneficiary of this event. Proceeds and donations will benefit the young learners, and future leaders aged 14 to 18 attending the school, where they receive three cooked meals a day to support their educational development.

Additional resources were distributed to targeted areas in Cape Town by our NEETs (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) and Stitch Ahead Programme students.
