With the year-end fast approaching, nonprofit organisations (NPOs) are encouraged to reflect on their progress and start planning for the year ahead, says Feryal Domingo, acting executive director of Inyathelo.
Established in 2002 as a nonprofit trust, Inyathelo builds capacity in NPOs and higher education institutions with resources, training and support. “Strong governance, compliance with regulations, and robust, innovative fundraising strategies are key if NPOs are to not only survive, but thrive,” says Domingo.
There are approximately 277,067 registered NPOs in South Africa, according to the Department of Social Development. It is estimated that about 50,000 unregistered NPOs operate within the country as well.
Inyathelo offers the following tips to help organisations position themselves optimally:
1. Have a clear, robust strategic plan. Harness data from past programmes and financial reports to set goals for the year ahead. Involve staff, Board members, donors and beneficiaries. Their insights will help shape the direction of the organisation and ensure that programmes align with stakeholders’ needs.
2. Strengthen governance. NPOs face increasing scrutiny from the Department of Social Development, SARS and the regional body of the Financial Action Task Force. It’s essential to have clear policies and procedures in place to ensure accountability, transparency and best practice.
3. Train board members. Equip board members with the knowledge and skills to provide strategic oversight. Consider offering training sessions on key topics.
4. Diversify revenue streams. NPOs should broaden their fundraising bases and avoid over-reliance on single sources of income. Consider alternative funding sources such as digital crowdfunding campaigns, social enterprise activities, paid workshops, and corporate partnerships on social responsibility initiatives.
5. Monitor and measure. Invest in monitoring and evaluation tools to track outcomes, report to stakeholders, and improve programme quality.
6. Strengthen donor relationships. Ensure impact reporting and regular
communication.
7. Focus on staff well-being. A supportive work environment and flexible working arrangements can reduce stress, increase productivity and avoid burnout. NPOwer offers free mental health support and care to nonprofit staff, volunteers, and leaders. The toll-free helpline is 0800 515 515, message 43010 or email info@npowersa.org.
8. Build a reserve fund. This helps ensure financial stability and resilience during unexpected challenges or funding gaps. It enables an organisation to sustain its operations and fulfil its mission even in times of economic uncertainty.
“As we head into a new year, it’s time for every nonprofit to reflect, plan, and take action to build a stronger, more sustainable future. Let’s work together to ensure that 2025 is a year of growth and impact for the sector,” says Domingo.
Inyathelo offers numerous resources for NPOs and civil society organisations. These include articles, publications, training videos, toolkits, research reports, bespoke workshops and one-on-one clinic sessions.
