At Embrace Village, we pride ourselves on the connections we help build within the community, and it fills us with joy when these connections blossom into lasting friendships!
There is something especially spectacular when these connections happen spontaneously. Part of our work is to support birth mothers in crisis by providing material and moral support to keep babies from being separated from their mothers.
We met Mama B and Mama S independently of each other but both because they were experiencing so much stress surrounding the imminent births of their respective babies.
The moment we started to knit community care around them, the magic unfolded …
Mama B and Mama S met each other during very stressful times. Mama S had just delivered a healthy baby girl, and Mama B was visiting her premature twins in the NICU at Baragwanath Hospital. During a routine check-up for Mama S and Mama B's discharge with one of her sons, their pickups happened to coincide. Both women, holding their new babies, instantly bonded in the short car ride home.
Despite their traumatic ordeals, they were able to share a laugh about how the security guards at Baragwaneth Hospital would just say "go straight" when trying to find another department, knowing what a labyrinth the place is. This shared experience marked the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Now, two months later, these women are here for each other. They enjoy hanging out together with their kids and talking about their futures. As our work transitions from a home for abandoned babies to a community centre, these moms play a pivotal role in showing the "new mommies" what healthy friendship looks like.
The motto of “Reviving the Village” underscores the work at Embrace Village. We work hard every day to reweave the social fabric and remind people how wonderful it is to be supported and held by those around us in times of trouble.
